HEAVY RAIN DEVELOPING IN EAST GIPPSLAND
Weather Situation: A low pressure system will develop off the
southern NSW coast and linger near East Gippsland over the coming
days, eventually moving away into the Tasman Sea during
Saturday.
Rain will develop across Gippsland on Wednesday night, with
heavier falls developing during the day on Thursday.
Rainfall rates are generally expected to be steady with falls of
around 5mm/hour, however the heaviest falls expected in the warning
area on Thursday afternoon may see accumulations of up to 80mm in a
6 hour period. This may lead to FLASH FLOODING.
Rain will continue during Friday, and likely to persist until
Saturday morning, although rainfall rates are expected to ease by
this time.
72 hour rainfall totals of 100-200mm are expected to accumulate in
the warning area during the 3 days from Thursday to Saturday.
Moderate to Major riverine flooding is likely to develop in East
Gippsland catchments. A FLOOD WATCH is current. For details, please
see www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/
Locations which may be affected include Buchan, Mallacoota, Cann
River, Chandlers Creek, Combienbar and Bonang.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from
trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if
possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater,
mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable
and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and
trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away
from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees,
drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are
live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into
waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and
debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river
levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through
VicEmergency website/app/hotline.
