DAMAGING WINDS ALONG THE EAST COAST, EASING BY EARLY
AFTERNOON.
Weather Situation: A strong and gusty west to northwesterly stream
precedes a cold front to cross Tasmania Thursday afternoon and
evening, bringing a colder west to southwesterly change.
DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with
peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible over eastern Tasmania
during Thursday morning, and about the northeast during Thursday
morning and early afternoon.
Winds are expected to moderate below the warning threshold south
of Bicheno by about midday, then about the northeast during the
early afternoon, however winds will remain fresh and gusty across
the state for the remainder of the day.
Locations which may be affected include Scottsdale, Whitemark, St
Helens, Swansea, Bicheno and Orford.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Western, Upper
Derwent Valley, South East and Midlands districts and the warning
for these districts is CANCELLED.
The strongest gusts reported during Thursday are:
143 km/h at kunanyi/Mt Wellington at 1:14am
133 km/h at Maatsuyker Island at 2:12am
120 km/h at Hartz Mountains at 2:46am
119 km/h at Scotts Peak at 2:09am
104 km/h at Cape Grim at 7:40am
100 km/h at Cape Bruny at 4:15am
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play
equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to
TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when
driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further
advice.
