VIGOROUS MONSOON SQUALLS ACROSS THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN TOP END

Weather Situation: The monsoon is strengthening to the north of a deep, slow-moving monsoon low over northern WA.
Wind gusts associated with monsoonal showers and thunderstorms have been increasing in strength and are likely to peak today.

DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of up to 100 km/h with squally monsoonal showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the warning area.

These conditions are expected to begin to ease on Wednesday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Darwin, Katherine, Palmerston, Wadeye, Wurrumiyanga, Nauiyu, Pirlangimpi, Mataranka and Pine Creek.

Recent wind gusts include:

92km/h at Tindal at 3:50pm Tuesday

80km/h at Point Fawcett (Tiwi Islands) at 12:48am Tuesday

78 km/h at Charles Point (west of Darwin) at 10:01 am Tuesday.

72km/h at Wadeye (Port Keats) at 10:51am Tuesday

67 km/h at Darwin Airport at 10:36am Tuesday.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
